The Hamilton Police
Grade Four Pipe BandGrade Four North American Champions, 2004 Grade Four Canadian Champions, 2003-4 PPBSO Grade Four Champion Supreme, 2004 The nucleus of the Hamilton Police Grade Four Band was formed in 2002 as a Grade Five unit, and rapidly developed into one of the top bands playing at that level, culminating in a win at the 2004 Canadian Pipe Band Championships and later at the famed Fergus Scottish Festival. The same year, the existing Grade Four unit won the Canadian and North American titles, as well as the PPBSO champion supreme title. The nucleus of that band moved on to Grade Three and will likely compete in Grade Two in 2007. The band was started as a developmental band for musicians graduating from drum pads and chanters into a full band setting, as well as an outlet for experienced musicians who wanted to stay involved in the pipes and drums without the practice time demands required for higher levels of competitive playing. Success on the field has led to a more aggressive schedule, and upgrading the band to Grade Four. The band started competing in 2003, picking up a medal at its second competition, and then competing in a full list of games in the 2004 PPBSO season. The band is led by Pipe-Major Don Forgan, a police service detective and former member of the legendary Clan MacFarlane PB, and well-known drummer and instructor Sandy McKail. Band members range in age from early teens to people in their '50s and '60s. |
